Mayorga Coffee and Rock Creek International School of Washington, DC have joined forces in researching the true meaning of sustainable development in the coffee industry. As a company committed to conscientious and responsible growth, Mayorga represents the perfect real-life case study from which middle-school students can begin to explore the economic, social, environmental, and operational considerations crucial to a successfully sustainable coffee roasting business.

“We wanted to work with a local company committed to the ideals we embody here at school,” said Humanities and Social Sciences teacher Roohi Iqbal. “It is one thing to learn about such concepts in a school setting; it is quite another to be able to collaborate with a successful local business and allow the students to witness, firsthand, the complexity of such issues. We are thrilled that Mayorga's emphasis on education has brought us together for this unprecedented partnership, and truly look forward to watching these projects develop.” The work will culminate in a “Global Coffee Awareness Fair”, a multimedia presentation to be held at the Mayorga Coffee Factory for both the school community and the community at large.

Designed to nestle unobtrusively within this healing atmosphere, the new Mayorga adds another dimension to the hospital’s welcoming environment. It not only provides a much-needed break from the inevitable stress of hospital staff and visitors, but is also an equally accessible shop for nearby neighbors in search of a quiet moment and an authentic coffee experience.

    LEARN: Coffees of the World

A cup of coffee carries the fingerprint of the country in which it was cultivated. Just as grapes absorb the culture, personality, and geographical uniqueness of a specific vineyard, so do coffee beans carry the signature of the region, country, and even farm from which they were grown. While there is tremendous variety among the countries within each of the regions below, we’ve provided a basic foundation from which to explore these rich, exotic, flavorful corners of the globe.

Latin American & Carribean: The coffees produced in this growing region are distinguished by their light body, simplicity and sharp acidity. They are typically expected to have bright flavors with a clean, crisp finish. Coffee nations in this region include Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Panama, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Jamaica.

African: Coffees from this growing region are among the most distinctive in the world, characterized by dry, winy acidity, chocolate and fruit undertones, rustic flavors and intense aromas. Ethiopia is the native land of coffee, and it was in Yemen that coffee was first cultivated and prepared. Coffee nations in this region include Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Cameroon.

Asian (including Indian & Indonesian): This region of the world tends to have coffee that is full to heavy bodied, smooth, syrupy, low in acidity, and is sometimes spicy or winey. Coffee nations in this region include Yemen, India, Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, & Papua New Guinea, and Hawaii (USA).

    FEATURED SPECIAL: Ethiopian Yirgacheffe
    ethiop
Ethiopia is said to be the region from which all coffees have originated. Perhaps this is why Yirgacheffe is such a unique, intoxicatingly fragrant coffee. It is characterized by a distinct, berry-like fruitiness with floral undertones. A definite must for any serious coffee drinker.

    THE MAYORGA FAMILY: Sylvia Sgambati-Jones

Showcasing Mayorga coffees at Costco Warehouses throughout the mid-Atlantic region, the “Brew Crew” has introduced thousands of people to the Mayorga coffee experience. With her breadth of life experience, passion for people, and extensive community involvement, Sylvia Sgambati-Jones has been an integral part of the Brew Crew almost from its very beginnings, and has found a perfect match in her part-time weekend work with Mayorga.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, Sylvia received an important cultural lesson upon moving to Ashville, NC in the 1960’s. “Growing up in New York City, we had no inkling of segregation,” she said. “In Asheville, for the first time, I realized what segregation really was, and saw how it was lived. It was a very different place, and a very difficult adjustment.” She remained in Asheville for about nine years, until her then- boyfriend, now-husband-of-thirty-one-years decided that his journey was to take him to the DC Metropolitan area. Sylvia joined him, and began a series of jobs that would take her from the dental assistant’s chair to the Ball Jar Factory to telephone operating, painting and wallpapering, and greenhouse pruning.

As the mother of three, Sylvia happened to stop by the Mayorga Coffee Warehouse and Roasting Facility one afternoon to solicit advertising for her children’s school fundraiser. She noticed a sign on the door for “part-time roadshow work”, and thus began her longstanding relationship with the members of this family-owned business.

“First and foremost, I have stayed with Mayorga all this time because we make a great product. I couldn’t work for someone that I didn’t believe produced a product that I would want to promote and share with someone. I just love the dialogue I have with customers, and the rapport that we have established with those faces we now see again and again, each time we visit. I truly enjoy helping them discover a coffee that would be a good fit for them and, once we do, the ongoing and distinctly personal relationship they seem to share with this family business,” she said.

But Sylvia is equally committed to the Mayorga social mission, and tremendously proud to be associated with such a consciously humanitarian organization. “I believe in what this company stands for, in their devotion to both the community and the environment. Even when I first set foot in the place, I got the feeling that they really care—that they want to reach out into the community and to be a part of it. When I learned that we were donating coffee chaff to a farm that employs individuals with disabilities—an issue very close to my heart—I cried. In every aspect, this company is contributing to society.”
