As the Mayorga coffee brand grew, the Mayorga cigar brand exploded. At year-end 2000, over 2.5 million Mayorga cigars were selling nationwide. Mayorga coffee had grown from a one-man operation to ten employees and a portfolio of impressive wholesale clientele. In April 2001, Martin and Kerry made the decision to sell the Mayorga cigar brand to JR Cigars. This allowed them to focus solely on their thriving coffee business. The Mayorga roasting facility is located in Rockville, MD, where we roast to order for wholesale accounts nationwide. The 12,000 sq ft facility employs twenty individuals, all of whom must learn the intricacies of shade-grown Specialty coffees. Mayorga also operates several retail locations in the DC area, including a 6,200 sq ft coffee lounge and roastery in Silver Spring, MD, which has become one of the premier destinations of the DC Metro area. Mayorga Coffee employs a total of eighty individuals, focusing on their personal and professional development through a focus on team management. Unlike most small to mid-sized roasters, Mayorga Coffee Roasters specializes in the sourcing and selection of fine estate coffees directly from small shade coffee farms. About 75% of all Mayorga coffee is certified by the Rainforest Alliance. The company's focus is to work with small farmers to develop the best coffees possible, to support and promote the practice sustainable farming, and to provide a healthy standard of living for farm employees.
