At La Bastilla Estate in Jinotega, Nicaragua, the central focus is "Sustainability through a focus on social and ecological responsibility"; since completing the RA certification process, La Bastilla has experienced a rebirth in worker interest and consistency. The farm transformed its dilapidated housing into well-equipped and desirable accommodations-with rare amenities such as mattresses and blankets, and an infirmary with full-time health counselor and regular doctor visits, the farm is finally able to live up to the natural standards set by coffee grown "in the shade of orchid-draped trees in a misty, high-altitude environment that provides optimal conditions for high-quality beans." According to the RA, they are also cooperating with the government to patrol the adjacent nature reserve, plant native trees in deforested areas and protect the streams that run through the farm.
